Peak District Information
The
Peak District was the first national park in the UK. and today
it is still the most popular - some say it is one of the most
popular national parks in the world. Although many visit the
Peak District for a lazy sightseeing holiday, the real beauty
of the park is the diversity of its activities - these include
caving, cycling, hang gliding, horse riding, rock climbing, walking
and water sports.
The Peak District is split into two areas, the White Peak
in the south and the Dark Peak in the north. Both have their
unique attractions, the gritstone "edges" of Stanage,
Froggatt, Curbar and Gardoms attract the climbing fraternity,
the extensive cave systems are very popular with potholers who
can often be seen at the end of the day making their way home
in wet suits and miners' helmets.
Carsington Water, in the south of the Peak District, is home
to many sports including sailing, canoeing and windsurfing, very
popular in the summer months and weekends. With acommodation
being plentiful and cheap, thousands of water sport enthusiasts
enjoy this aspect of the Peak District every year.
Walkers, however, have the greatest choice in the Peak District.
Whether a leisurely stroll through the lanes and picturesque
cottages of the White Peak or some serious hiking over the gritstone
of the Dark Peak, there are hundreds of trails for every level
of expertise and commitment.
