The Old Post restaurant is located in the historic market town of Chesterfield, within easy walking distance of the town centre and the rail station and just 10 minutes drive from the eastern edge of the Peak District National Park.
Rumoured to be the 3rd oldest building in Chesterfield after the Church of St Mary & All Saints and The Royal Oak Public House, part of the building dates back to the 15th century with the majority being completed in the 18th century.
An old building full of history, the restaurant has been lovingly refurbished by Delia and Martin but has kept the focus on the original features such as the old beams and fireplace. Dining at the Old Post is like taking a step into the past; guests are encouraged to have a ‘pew’ in the newly added bar, in the colder months the log burner is lit – hence the ‘Snug’ has been created. Then, on to your table in the restaurant to enjoy the quality dishes created by Martin, the Chef Proprietor using (wherever possible) locally sourced produce, whilst enjoying the elegant but traditional surroundings (and, perhaps enjoying a glass or two of one of our wonderful wines!)
Part of the Post started life as a workers house on the Durrant Family Estate and has housed among other things a greengrocer, butcher, laundry and post office ~ hence the name “The Old Post”. At some point in this history, 43 Holywell Street and 1 Durrant Road were joined together to form the building which now houses the restaurant and accommodation above.
The building is featured as Holywell Post office in the anniversary stained glass window in the church of St Mary & All Saints. Donated by the people of Chesterfield in 1984 to commemorate the 750th anniversary of the church, the window depicts Chesterfield through the ages.
Head Chef – Profile – Martin Clayton
Chef and Proprietor Martin Clayton has been in the ‘chef -ing’ business for over 30 years.
Previously Head Chef at the Cavendish Hotel in Baslow, more recently Head Chef at Calabria on Glumangate, and now striking out on his own new venture at the Old Post.
Highlights of his career have included winning the Matrise Escoffier award from the Association Culinaire Francaise, the East Midland Chef of the Year competition and numerous gold medals at national competition level.
