Art in Chesterfield comes in all shapes and sizes – from watercolour paintings to huge outdoors metal sculptures.
Being on the edge of the Peak District National Park creates an amazing opportunity for any landscape painter or photographer – with the countryside’s diverse scenery and the year’s changing seasons there are many, many pictures to be made.
But most prevalent in the town these days are sculptures commissioned by the council.

Entertainment & Conference Centre
The Winding Wheel is a Grade II-listed entertainment and conference centre, built in 1923 as a cinema.
The building consists of three rooms: the Auditorium, the Ballroom, and the Function Room. Each of these rooms has its own private bar and catering area. All rooms are fully accessible.
The Winding Wheel was built to the design of Sheffield architect Harold J Shepherd. Originally a cinema called The Picture House, it first opened its doors on 10th September 1923, seating 1,300 and showing a double bill of Heart’s Affair and The Play House starring Buster Keaton. The building was extended in 1930, adding a large ballroom and extra seating. It was in continual use as a cinema until its closure in 1981.
In 1987, Chesterfield Borough Council purchased and refurbished the building, keeping the internal decor intact, but removing the fixed seating and constructing a dance floor above the stalls. The building reopened as the Winding Wheel and was later Grade II-listed in 2000.
Since reopening it has hosted thousands of events, political conferences, wedding receptions, banquets and has been used for many television programmes.

The Pomegranate is a delightful Victorian 546-seat proscenium arch theatre housed in the Grade II listed [George] Stephenson Memorial Hall. Established in 1949 this is the country’s oldest civic theatre with Chesterfield Borough Council continuing the proud tradition of providing a year round programme of professional touring theatre and high quality local amateur productions.
Over the course of a theatregoing year we aim to make audiences laugh, cry and debate so why not ring the Box Office or investigate our website for details of the current season.
Our developing Arts programme offers small-scale music events, craft demonstrations, drama workshops, and a burgeoning New Playwrights’ scheme. These events are organised by our Arts Projects Officer, Carole Copeland who also runs the successful Pomegranate Youth Theatre.
And whatever draws you in the first time, it won’t be the last so why not investigate our great deals for regular customers and join the Friends of the Pomegranate?
The building which now houses Chesterfield’s Pomegranate Theatre and Museum was built in 1879 with funds raised entirely by public subscription. Built as a tribute to George Stephenson, the Stephenson Memorial Hall remained in private hands for ten years, before being purchased by Chesterfield Corporation.
It became Britain’s first Civic Theatre in 1949. In February 1982 Chesterfield Theatre Limited was created to house incoming touring companies. In June of the same year, following a public appeal for suggestions, the Civic became the Pomegranate Theatre, taking up the image from the town’s original Coat of Arms, copies of which can still be seen in the stained glass windows of the top of the circle stairs.
